Les Flâneurs first saw Crested Butte during the summer, as part of a visit to Aspen. Reportedly, the two towns are just a 45 minute off-road drive apart, however, the paved route is closer to 4 hours. We were so delighted by this visit, that we placed CB on the list as a potential place to live and made a solemn vow to return during ski season to give it a "powder shot."
Oh my Flâneurs, what a delight this mountain is! There is an incredible diversity of terrain from beginner though expert, which is well served by the lift system. We spent no time waiting in lines, which was partly a function of our late spring date, just two weeks short of mountain closure for the ski season.
This year, which the locals referred to as "snowmageddon," they received over 200 inches of snow. While this is not as great a total as other mountains, it was more than enough to provide a thick base for the spring skiing conditions that greeted us on ski day one. On day two, we were blessed with 3 to 8 inches of freshies, depending upon the location, and we also got another inch for day three.
Our latest CB resolution is to return during the summer to check out the trails via foot, off-road vehicle and bicycle, to make the 6 hour trek into Aspen and sample some of the summer scene. Expect further reports from this great location!
